The disciples knew that the announcement of the Messianic Kingdom's arrival would be made by Elijah. Fulfilling that role, John the Baptist had faithfully led a repentance movement away from the corruption of the Temple. Jesus' disciples found that the littleness of their faith produced less than expected ministry effectiveness.
