#7 - Thyatira: The Corrupted Church

Feb 14, 1999    Steve Troxel

In this powerful exploration of Revelation 2:18-29, we encounter the church at Thyatira—a congregation praised for its love, service, faith, and patience, yet harboring a dangerous corruption within. The message reveals a sobering progression: coolness in our relationship with Christ leads to compromise, and compromise ultimately results in corruption. What makes this particularly relevant to us today is the recognition that what one generation tolerates, the next generation embraces. The church at Thyatira had allowed a Jezebel-like figure to introduce sexual immorality and idolatry into their midst, and no one was willing to confront the problem. This challenges us to examine our own lives and communities—are we more concerned about sins in the White House than sins in our own house? The all-seeing eyes of Christ, described as flames of fire, penetrate every hidden corner of our lives. Yet alongside this sobering reality comes an incredible promise: those who overcome and remain faithful will rule with Christ in His millennial kingdom and receive the morning star—a symbol of intimate relationship with Him. The call to repentance isn't just for unbelievers; it's primarily for those of us already in relationship with God. We're urged to change direction, to stop dabbling in things that grieve the Spirit, and to hold fast to truth in an age where moral absolutes seem to have disappeared. Our faithfulness now determines our authority and intimacy with Christ in the age to come.
